Abstract

Purpose

The coal-based synthetic natural gas slag (CSNGS) is a solid waste remaining from the incomplete combustion of raw coal to produce gas. With the continuous promotion of efficient and clean utilization of coal in recent years, the stockpiling of CSNGS would increase gradually, and it would have significant social and environmental benefits with reasonable utilization of CSNGS. This study prepared a new geopolymer by mixing CSNGS with PC42.5 cement in a certain mass ratio as the precursor, with sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution as the alkali activators.

Design/methodology/approach

The formulation of coal-based synthetic natural gas slag geopolymer (CSNGSG) was determined by an orthogonal test, and then the strength mechanism and microstructure of CSNGSG were characterized by multi-scale tests.

Findings

The results show that the optimum ratio of CSNGSG was a sodium silicate modulus of 1.3, an alkali dosage of 21% and a water cement ratio of 0.36 and the maximum unconfined compressive strength of CSNGSG at 7 d was 26.88 MPa. The increase of curing temperature could significantly improve the compressive strength of CSNGSG, and the curing humidity had little effect on the compressive strength of CSNGSG. The development of the internal strength of CSNSG at high temperatures consumed SiO2, Al2O3 and CaO and the intensity of corresponding crystalline peaks decreased.

Originality/value

Moreover, the vibration of chemical bonds in different wavenumbers also revealed the reaction mechanism of CSNSG from another perspective. Finally, the relevant test results indicated that CSNGS had practical application value as a raw material for the preparation of geopolymer cementing materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to determine the parameters of the preparation process for devulcanized and pyrolytic crumb rubber modified asphalt (DCRMA) and then study the rheological and microscopic properties of DCRMA through experiments.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a new preparation process for DCRMA was developed, then the penetration, softening point and viscosity tests were employed to determine the parameters of the preparation process. The crumb rubber (CR) solubility, Fluorescence microscopy (FM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis tests were conducted to verify the devulcanized and pyrolytic effectiveness of the preparation process. Furthermore, dynamic shear rheometer and bending beam rheometer were used to characterize the high and low-temperature rheological properties of DCRMA.

Findings

The results showed that the penetration balanced the CR degradation and the virgin asphalt aging well and thus could be used as a main parameters control indicator. The CR solubility, FM and FTIR tests proved that the CR has been fully devulcanized and pyrolytic via the preparation process. The DCRMA exhibited better low-temperature and fatigue performance and lower rutting performance than the conventional crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) with the same CR content. Finally, the time–temperature superposition principle could be employed for all binders in this study.

Originality/value

A new preparation process for DCRMA was developed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the influence of surface texture distribution in respect to the procedure of pavement surface wear on friction performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The Weierstrass–Mandelbrot (W-M) equation is used to appropriate pavement surface profile. Through this approximation, artificial rough profiles by combining fractal parameters and conventional statistical parameters for different macro-texture are created to simulate the procedure of pavement surface wear. Those artificial profiles are then imported into discrete element model to calculate the interaction forces and friction coefficient between rolling tire and road. Furthermore, wavelet theory is used to decompose the profiles into different scales and explore the correlation between the profiles of each scale and pavement friction.

Findings

The influence of tire vertical displacement (TVD) on friction coefficient is greater than fractal dimension of road surface texture. When TVD decreases, the profiles can provide higher friction, but the rolling stability of tire is poor. The optimal fractal dimension of road surface is about 1.5 when considering friction performance. The pavement friction performance improves with wavelength from 0.4 to 6.4mm and decreases with wavelength from 12.8 to 51.2mm.

Originality/value

Artificial fractal curves are generated and analyzed by combining W-M function with traditional parameter, which can also be used to analyze the influence of texture distribution on other pavement performance. The preliminary research provides a potential approach for the evaluation of pavement friction performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationships between power, relationship commitment and customer integration by replicating and extending Zhao et al. (2008) in China and the USA.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collects data from 210 manufacturers in China and 202 manufacturers in the USA. In this study, structural equation modelling is used to analyse the data.

Findings

This study finds that normative relationship commitment is positively associated with customer integration and expert and referent power are positively associated with normative relationship commitment in China and the USA. Reward and coercive power are positively associated with instrumental relationship commitment in China, whereas referent power is negatively associated. Referent, legal legitimate and reward power are positively associated with instrumental relationship commitment in the USA, whereas expert and legitimate power are negatively associated.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical evidence on the distinct impacts of different bases of mediated and non-mediated power in China and the USA, contributing to the development of the power-relationship commitment theory. The findings also provide insights into where and when the theory applies. The results can provide guidelines for managers to adjust the use of power to improve relationship commitment and customer integration in China and the USA.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between logistics park platforms, logistics location and operational performance. Relationship analysis helps managers respond to the changes that today’s logistics companies face, which include limited resources and facilities, market uncertainties and financial instabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured questionnaire is developed based on the resource-based view. Qualitative data collected from 273 companies in China are used in a structural equation model to test the conceptual model.

Findings

In logistics parks, logistics park platforms and location positively influence companies’ resource integration, which is positively related to operational performance. While logistics park platforms can improve operational performance directly, logistics location cannot. Resource integration is thus a full mediator between logistics location and operational performance, while it is a partial mediator between logistics park platforms and operational performance.

Originality/value

This study fills a gap in the literature on logistics parks, particularly on the relationships among operational performance, resource integration, logistics park platforms and the location of logistics parks in China. The authors provide guidelines for logistics park managers to organize their resources and develop capabilities for improving the operational performance of companies in logistics parks.

Abstract

Purpose

Following resource-based view, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of three intra-organizational structural elements on supply chain integration (SCI).

Design/methodology/approach

Based on data collected from ten countries, this study employs the structural equation modeling method to test the proposed model.

Findings

The results demonstrate that teamwork culture is positively related to three dimensions of SCI. Organizational commitment has positive effects on internal and customer integration (CI), whereas it has no significant effect on supplier integration (SI). Human goodness is only positively related to internal integration, but has no significant effect on SI or CI.

Originality/value

This study contributes to both structural elements literature and SCI enabler literature by operationalizing three human-related components of structural elements and empirically investigating relationships between intra-organizational structural elements and SCI.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the resource-based view (RBV), this study aims to investigate the impact of social capital, namely, structural (information sharing), cognitive (shared value) and relational (relationship commitment) capital in the supplier and the customer side on supply chain performance in a longitudinal design. It further aims to examine the moderating effect of change in competition intensity.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on two-wave data collected from 203 manufacturers in China, this study uses the ordinary least square and first-difference regression methods to test the proposed relationships.

Findings

The results show the effect of social capital on supply chain performance and the dynamic nature of supply chain social capital. The causal analysis further reveals the significance of supplier-side structural and relational capital in improving supply chain performance. Moreover, competitive intensity plays an important moderating role.

Originality/value

This study, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, is one of the first to demonstrate the longitudinal effect of supply chain social capital on supply chain performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of cross-functional coordination (cross-functional system, process and team coordination) on customer coordination (customer strategic and operational coordination) and operational performance. Following the lens of information processing theory (IPT), this study examines the diverse mechanisms of cross-functional coordination practices in enhancing firms’ information processing capabilities (IPCs) to cope with the higher information processing demands resulting from customer coordination, finally improving operational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on data collected from 410 Chinese manufacturers, the authors use the structural equation modeling method to test the theoretical model.

Findings

The authors found that cross-functional system coordination is positively associated with customer operational coordination (COC) but not customer strategic coordination (CSC). Cross-functional process coordination increases both customer strategic and operational coordination. Cross-functional team coordination significantly promotes CSC but not COC. Both customer operational and strategic coordination facilitate operational performance.

Originality/value

This research pioneers in identifying three dimensions of cross-functional coordination based on IPT and examine their distinct impacts on various customer coordination activities. The authors distinguish two customer coordination dimensions and reveal their effects on operational performance. This research contributes to the development of IPT. Additionally, this study provides guidelines for managers to coordinate internal departments and collaborate with external customers to enhance firms’ operational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the purpose of this paper is to combine concepts from human resource management (HRM) and supply chain management (SCM) fields and explore the effects of high-involvement HRM practices on supply chain integration (SCI).

Design/methodology/approach

Using empirical survey data collected from ten countries, the authors examine the specific effects of three dimensions of high-involvement HRM practices – employee skills, incentives and participation – on three types of SCI – internal integration, supplier and customer integration. The authors use structural equation modeling and the maximum-likelihood estimation method to test the proposed relationships.

Findings

The results confirm the overall relevancy of HRM to SCI. However, several proposed links are not supported by the data collected.

Originality/value

This study makes both theoretical and managerial contributions by empirically examining the interface between HRM and SCI. More specifically, it examines the effects of different high-involvement HRM practices on different types of SCI. The findings will not only help researchers to better understand the interface, but will also guide managers in adjusting HRM practices to achieve desired operational goals.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to investigates the relationship of strategic choices of pure cost‐, pure differentiation‐, or a combination‐strategy on a composite measure of financial performance for third‐party logistics (3PL) providers in Hong Kong. In addition, it seeks to identify the importance of operations priorities underlying the respective adopted strategy, as well as the importance given to future competitive challenges for each strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

Uses cluster analysis, ANOVA.

Findings

Logistics service providers classified to follow different strategies report different financial performance, with companies adhering to the combined strategy of cost and differentiation performing best, followed by pure differentiation companies, which in turn outperform pure cost‐, commodity driven‐companies.

Research limitations/implications

Future research may be widened to include customer, and not solely competitor, perceptions. Further studies could elaborate on technology adoption, information sharing, strategy formulation, operations practices, and benchmarking. Other studies could focus on the differences between high and low performers in terms of business performance, and the processes that enable low performers to become high performers; as well as comparing logistics strategies and practices between different countries.

Practical implications

Third‐party logistics providers, solely competing on cost and offering basic services only, need to differentiate to gain improved financial performance. Logistics companies can improve along multiple operational dimensions to achieve competitive advantage in the marketplace. Research identifies operational areas to be emphasized to drive strategy according to strategic orientation, as well as generic factors that will drive future logistics management in Hong Kong.

Originality/value

Linking perceived financial performance to strategic choices of pure cost‐, pure differentiation‐, or a combination‐strategy for 3PL providers in Hong Kong.
